Women's Club Basketball Defends State Title
CMU storms back from early setbacks, advances to regionals
February 23, 2017
They may play “just for fun,” but make no mistake: the Central Methodist University club sports women’s basketball team plays to win. They recently claimed their second consecutive Missouri state championship.
Club sports – think an intercollegiate version of intramural sports – is on the rise, and the CMU women’s team has risen to the top in their home state. After defending their state title at a tournament in Springfield this past weekend (Feb. 17-18), they advance to the regional competition in March.
The nine-member CMU team roared back from two early defeats from club teams from Missouri State University, coming through the loser’s bracket to claim the 2017 Missouri Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (MOIRSA) championship.
CMU avenged an earlier 51-38 loss to a club team of Missouri State University soccer players, to win the championship game over that same team 46-41.
CMU seniors Darcy Latham (Bismarck) and Mary Rose Gonzalez (Slater) were named to the all-tournament team, according the club Coach William M. Rambo III, assistant coordinator of student activities.
“I have never been so proud of such a talented and humble group of young women,” Rambo said. “These young ladies truly represent CMU’s core values.”
Other members of the team include their captain, Caroline Combs (senior, Tipton); Makenzie Erikson (junior, Independence); Caitlyn Harwell (senior, East Prairie); Madilynn Lyons (sophomore, New Franklin); Elizabeth Novak (senior, Galt); Claire Schumacher (freshman, Wentzville); and Abby Thompson (junior, Glasgow).
Assistant coaches were CMU graduate students Austin Gardner (Stockton) and Jeremiah Jackson (Salisbury).
They travel to Lincoln, Neb. for the regional National Association of Intramural and Recreational Sports tournament March 3-5.
