FAYETTE, Mo. - After leading the CMU football team to a 45-26 upset of NAIA No. 17 Benedictine College, freshman Bryant Jackson and sophomore Brett Fitchpatrick were named the Heart of America Athletic Conference football offensive and defensive players-of-the-week, respectively.
Bryant Jackson (Lee's Summit, Mo.) earned the honor after leading the CMU offense to a school-record 645 yards of total offense in the game. The true freshman quarterback completed 28-of-50 passes for 506 yards and four touchdowns. Jackson's clock management in the second half allowed CMU take control of the game by outscoring Benedictine 21-7. In his first three collegiate games, Jackson has nearly a 60 percent completion rate and has thrown for eight touchdowns.
Brett Fitchpatrick (Pierce City, Mo.) came up big for CMU, with two interceptions in the fourth quarter. With CMU leading 38-26 and Benedictine threatening to score inside the CMU 10-yard line, Fitchpatrick intercepted a Benedictine pass in the end zone and returned it to the CMU 32. The CMU offense scored its final touchdown on the ensuing possession. Fitchpatrick grabbed his second interception on the first play of Benedictine's next possession. The sophomore defensive back also had seven tackles for the Eagles.
As the HAAC players-of-the-week, Jackson and Fitchpatrick will automatically be in contention for the NAIA player-of-the-week honors, which will be released later today.
