Support for Mobile Devices
The Central Methodist University email server is "ActiveSync" enabled. This allows you to receive your CMU email, contacts, and calendar on your mobile device through your cellular provider's data network or an internet connection.
CMU will provide support on an "as time permits" basis for users who own an iPhone or a phone running Windows Mobile/Palm and want to check their University email with the device using their wireless provider's data network or an internet connection as long as the device meets the technical requirements determined by the University. While your mobile phone may be used for work-related activities, it is still a non-University owned device and the University can't guarantee that the device will work with our email system.
In addition, the University does not provide support for the physical connectivity
of any mobile device (example: connecting my mobile device via USB connection to my
PC) to a University-owned system
and does not provide support for mobile device upgrades (i.e. firmware, applications, operating system).Users should contact their wireless provider for support
Because there are many different implementations of Exchange ActiveSync on different mobile devices, we will not guarantee that our email server will work with every device. However, we have verified that our email system works with the majority of the following phones and mobile operating systems:
- Any phone running Windows Mobile 5.0 or higher. You can verify your version by going to "Start" then "Settings," clicking on the "System" tab and then the ABOUT icon. Popular phones in this category include the AT&T Tilt, Palm Treo 700w/700wx/750/800w, Motorola Q/Q9 and Samsung Blackjack. There are many other devices that run this OS.; Check with your cell phone provider for verification or questions regarding the technical specifications of your phone;
- Apple iPhone or iPod Touch, running at least firmware 2.0. Previous versions of the iPhone firmware (1.0 through 1.1.14) are capable of syncing with our servers but not through ActiveSync (it uses IMAP instead). We do not recommend this method (IMAP) because it passes your Central Methodist University network credentials in plain-text which could expose your account to hackers. To find out what version your iPhone or iPod Touch is running, click on "Settings" from the home screen, then "General" and then "About." The firmware will be shown under "Version." Check with your cell phone provider for verification or questions regarding the technical specifications of your phone;
- Palm OS smartphones and PDAs that are ActiveSync capable. Check with your cell phone provider for verification or questions regarding the technical specifications of your phone; At this time, CMU does not support Blackberry phones and can provide no assistance in connecting them with our email server other than providing users with the University email server address which is mail.centralmethodist.edu. If you are purchasing a new mobile device and want to use it to check your University email, CMU recommends devices that meet the technical requirements.
Should you synchronize your mobile device with the University email server on a regular basis and lose your mobile device, please notify the Office of Technology Services immediately.
