Tornado

City of Fayette siren will be activated when a tornado warning has been issues by the national weather bureau or a tornado has be sighted that poses a threat to the area.

If INDOORS:

  • Go to the lowest level of the building. Do not use elevators to descend to the lower levels;
  • Stay away from windows and doors with glass panes;
  • Sit or crouch in an inner hallway or room as these locations are preferable;

If OUTDOORS:

  • Seek shelter in the nearest building if possible:
    • Go to the lowest level of the building. Do not use elevators to descend to the lowest levels;
      • Stay away from windows and doors with glass panes;
      • Sit or crouch in an inner hallway or room as these locations are preferable;
  • If nearby shelter isn't available, go to the nearest ditch or depression, away from power lines, buildings, and trees. Do not stay in a vehicle or attempt to outrun a tornado;

After the tornado has passed, evaluate the situation and if emergency help is needed, call 911;

Be aware of dangerous structural conditions. Report damaged facilities to Plate Operations (660-248-6295). NOTE: Gas leaks and power failures create special hazards. Do not light a match or smoke;

Follow all instructions from CMU Officials or emergency personnel;
