‘Hero’s Homecoming’ At CMU
Dan Elliott is parade grand marshal
"A Hero's Homecoming" is the theme of 2013 festivities at Central Methodist University, coming up Friday through Sunday (Oct. 25-27). Everyone is welcome to visit Fayette for the celebration.
Dr. Dan Elliott, longtime Fayette resident and retired CMU faculty member and former curator of The Stephens Museum at the university, will serve as the Grand Marshal of the Homecoming Parade. The parade through downtown Fayette will begin at 10 a.m.
Elliott joined the CMU faculty in 1974. He retired in 2011 after 38 years as professor of biology and geology. He gained considerable renown in 1997 when, on a paleontological dig with CMU students in Howard County, Elliott discovered a starfish fossil. The fossil, the only one like it ever found, was dated at 350 million years old. It is on display in The Stephens Museum.
Elliott has been widely sought as a speaker and has published numerous scholarly and scientific articles. He is past president of the Missouri Archaeological Society, received the Missouri Association of Professional Archaeologists' Carl and Eleanor Chapman Award in 2005, and the Distinguished Service Award in 2011. Prior to joining CMU he taught at public schools in Raytown, Kansas City, and Liberty. Elliott and his wife Maggie have three grown children.
While several Homecoming-related activities are scheduled for Friday (Oct. 25) and Sunday (Oct. 27), the majority will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26. Highlights in addition to the parade include:
