Fifteen science students from area schools have earned top honors at the Region IV competition of the Missouri Junior Academy of Sciences, held this past Thursday, March 7 at Central Methodist University.
The students from Chillicothe, LaPlata and Moberly will now advance to the state contest scheduled for April 20 at the College of the Ozarks, according to Dr. James "Tiger" Gordon, chair of the division of science, mathematics and computer science at CMU and contest coordinator.
A total of 135 students took part in the Region IV event, Gordon noted. Region IV covers 24 counties in Missouri.
Participants must give an oral presentation of the results of research projects they have completed, as well as submit a written report of their research.
Students qualifying for the state competition of the Missouri Academy of Science, along with the title of their research project and sponsoring teacher, include:
Grade Six - Sarah Graves, Chillicothe, "The Effect of the Type of Light Bulb Has on the Amount of Energy Used," teacher Mrs. Amy Peoples; and Devin Dowel, Chillicothe, "The Effect of Beverage Type on the Discoloration of Teeth," Mrs. Peoples.
Grade Seven - Ashley Lewis, Moberly, "Chirping to the Heat," teacher Mrs. Paula Burkhart; Paul Henrickson, Moberly, "Arbelos," Mrs. Aimee Swift; Harlie Jones and Rylee Miller, Chillicothe, "The Effect of Smoking on Oxygen Saturation While Exercising," Mrs. Shaylee Rademacher; and Brett Shaffer and Trace Staton, "The Effect of Type of Fall Material in Maximum Drop Height of an Egg," Mrs. Rademacher.
Grade Eight - Emma Leamer, Chillicothe, "The Effect of Humidity of a Room on Bacteria Growth in a Petri Dish," teacher Mrs. Christine Jones; and Karson Keithley, Chillicothe, "The Effect of Music on an Athlete's Running Performance," Mrs. Jones.
Grade Nine - Joshua Sturm, LaPlata, "Which Story Format Affects the Memory of a Reader More?," teacher Mrs. Mary Feldkamp.
