This is a fairly complete list (print version) of the birds that we find on our study sites.
You need to be certain that you can identify the focal species by sound and sight.
You should also try to become proficient in recognizing the other species.

3 Ovenbird Mature Forest OVEN * "teacher teacher teacher"  (gradually gets louder) important, on ground, domed, opening faces downhill
4 Red-eyed Vireo Mature Forest REVI * "here I am, over here, where are you" neatly constructed, variety of heights, often side branch of oak
5 Wood Thrush Mature Forest WOTH * flute-like trill easier to find, big cup nest, often in crotch of subcanopy dogwood
6 Worm-eating Warbler Mature Forest WEWA * insect-like rattle (in steep draws) important, on ground, "lean-to" on steep slope
7 Black-and-white Warbler Mature Forest BAWW   sounds like squeaky wheel on ground, often near pines
8 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Mature Forest BGGN   incessant nasally sqeals nest in stratosphere, rarely found
9 Carolina Chickadee Mature Forest CACH   "fee bee fee bay" cavity
10 Eastern Wood-Pewee Mature Forest EWPE   "pee wee"  (duh) high horizontal limb, rarely found
11 Tufted Titmouse Mature Forest TUTI   "Peter Peter Peter" is classic call, but has many other noises cavity, not monitored
12 Great Crested Flycatcher Mature Forest GCFL   big old loud "WHEEP!"  cavity, not found
13 Louisiana Waterthrush Mature Forest LOWA   found in creek-bottoms "chewy chewy chew twitter chew" in creek bottom, tucked up in undercut bank or rootwad
14 Northern Parula Mature Forest NOPA   "zzzzzzzip!"  also has song similar to CERW high canopy, never found
15 Pine Warbler Mature Forest PIWA   dry insect-like rattle that comes from pine trees high canopy, never found
16 Scarlet Tanager Mature Forest SCTA   "Chik bur" = alarm call, song is sing-songy, but with sore throat flat cup, variable height, we find low ones
17 Summer Tanager Mature Forest SUTA   "Picky tucky tuck" = alarm call, song is sing-songy, but sweeter flat cup, variable height, we find low ones
18 White-breasted Nuthatch Mature Forest WBNU   "ank ank ank" cavity
19 Yellow-billed Cuckoo Mature Forest YBCU   weird.  "clik clik clik clik clik clik clik. . ." frequently found, large, blue eggs, sticks and some grape
20 Yellow-throated Vireo Mature Forest YTVI   Slower and hoarser than REVI Indistinguishable from REVI, generally near top of hill
21 Yellow-throated Warbler Mature Forest YTWA   descending "chewy chewy chewy chewy chew" associate with pine, nest high in pine canopy
22 American Redstart ? AMRE   variable warble singing neat cup, often in crotch, rare but increasing on sites?
23 Blue-winged Warbler Early-succession BWWA * "Bee Buzzz" on ground in grassy area or in glade
24 Hooded Warbler Early-succession HOWA * "A-wheet  a-wheet a-wheeteo"  also has 2nd variation (wheety wheety wheet) neat cup, usually 1 to 2 meters high, often edge
25 Indigo Bunting Early-succession INBU * "tee tee    tsi tsi    chi chi   chew chew"  (not exactly, but listen for phrasing in pairs) neat cup, usually .5 to 2 meters high, 
26 Prairie Warbler Early-succession PRAW * ascending "zee zee zee zee zi zi zi zi" neat cup, often in dense young oak
27 White-eyed Vireo Early-succession WEVI * "quick give me a beer quick" or "chik per wheel oh chik" looks like vireo nest, in dense vegetation
28 Yellow-breasted Chat Early-succession YBCH * "kook kook kee"  song often given in flight larger nest, invariably contains grape vine, likes where thick and prickly
29 American Goldfinch Early-succession AMGO   "potato chip" = call, song is a warble-ey thing nests later, incorporates thistle
30 Common Yellowthroat Early-succession COYE   "whitchety - whitchety - whitchety whitch" nests in thick shrubs, not common
31 Eastern Towhee Early-succession EATO   "drink your tea"  or  "drink your beer"  depends on time of day nests on ground, often in spot with some grass
32 Northern Cardinal Early-succession NOCA   variable, with sweet notes nest messy, many small sticks, rootlets, often in cedar
33 American Crow Both AMCR   "caw"   : ) big, high and rare
34 Blue Jay Both BLJA   various jay noises big, high and rare
35 Brown-headed Cowbird Both BHCO   Male gives flight whistle and gurgling perch "song".  Female gives rattle call always check for cowbird eggs and young in every nest
36 Carolina Wren Both CARW   "Teakettle Teakettle Teakettle" or "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger" weird cavities
37 Cerulean Warbler Both CERW   "diga diga diga dee"  sound a bit like NOPA.  Difficult, but important generally too high to observe

39 Downy Woodpecker Mature Forest DOWO   descending whinny cavity
