Dr. John CarterJohn John J. Carter is professor of history and political science at Central Methodist University where he has been a member of the faculty since 1980. He studied political science and literature at Westminster College and holds graduate degrees in political science from the University of Central Missouri and the University of Missouri. He teaches courses in American political institutions, public law, international relations and political history.

Dr. Carter is the senior faculty member of the division of social science’s faculty, and served as chairman of the division from 1988 to 1997 and again from 2003 to 2006. During those intervals he oversaw the addition of the majors in sociology, criminal justice and communications. Since 1990 he has directed the University’s Pre-Law program, which provides co-curricular support services for students interested in qualifying for admission to law schools.

Dr. Carter is the author of a number of scholarly works, including three books on the history of the American intelligence community, including his latest, Covert Action as a Tool of Presidential Foreign Policy: From the Bay of Pigs to Iran-Contra, which was published by The Edwin Mellen Press of New York in April 2006. For Academic Year 2008-2009 CMU awarded him a half-time research sabbatical in furtherance of his scholarly work.

Dr. Carter and his wife, Jerri have resided in Howard County for the last twenty-seven years. Mrs. Carter is an alumna of the University, M.Ed. 1998, as is the couple’s daughter Elizabeth, B.S. (Computer Science and Business, Summa Cum Laude) 2005.
