wireless network

Wireless is NOT available in your dorm room, you might pick up a weak signal from the lobby but you must use the port in your room for internet access.

Smiley Library is setup with wireless technology.  Laptops are available for check-out at the main circulation desk allowing students to "surf" the internet from practically anywhere in the library.

"Hot Spots" for internet access are located in all residence hall lobbies, Eyrie Cafe, Clingenpeel, Conservatory, Inman Plaza, Rec Center, Stedman, Student Center, TBerry and the Quad.

The setup and use of unauthorized wireless access points is prohibited.  This helps minimize interference problems between wireless networks and other devices using radio frequencies.

For XP users to connect to the CMU wireless network.

  1. Make sure your wireless connection is enabled
  2. Right Click on Wireless Connection and choose View Available Wireless Networks
  3. Highlight CMUWAP and click on Connect
  4. If you are given a security warning choose to Connect Anyway
  5. Now open up your web browser and try to go to the internet.  If you have not already registered your PC on our network, you will be prompted to register it, otherwise you should be able to get to the internet.

This connection will not give you access to your home site (Z drive), only the internet.  If you have trouble setting up your connection, contact the CMU technology helpdesk or stop by the Campus Computing Outpost Office.  Internet speed will be dependent on the number of users using the wireless connection and the proximity to the wireless access point.
