John D. Perkins, DMADr. John Perkins

John D. Perkins holds degrees from The University of Texas (D.M.A.), The University of Wisconsin (M.M.), and St. Cloud State University in Minnesota (B.S.). He joined the faculty at Central Methodist University in August 2004, where he teaches studio trumpet and horn, directs the brass ensemble, and teaches music education and music history courses. Before relocating to Missouri, Dr. Perkins served on the faculty at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania and at Angelo State University in Texas, and previously served as a music educator in a San Antonio area school district. While pursuing the doctorate, he was a Graduate Assistant under Professor Raymond Crisara at The University of Texas.


Perkins has performed and continues to perform with several brass ensembles, including the Show Me Brass Ensemble (MO), Columbia Civic Orchestra Brass Quintet (MO), Cumberland Brass Quintet (PA), Delta Brass Quintet (PA), and the Icehouse Brass Quintet (TX). As a soloist, he has appeared several times with the Karl King Band (IA), Hagerstown Municipal Band (MD), Grand Sousa Festival Band (PA), Cumberland Valley School of Music recital series (PA), the Austin Handel/Haydn Society (TX), the Angelo State University Wind and Jazz Ensembles (TX), and most recently with the Central Methodist University Concert Band. In 2008, he will perform a solo with the Marshall Philharmonic Orchestra (MO). Perkins has also enhanced services musically in countless churches in nearly a dozen states, including Washington, D.C. and has performed in the Odyssey Chamber Music Series at First Baptist Church in Columbia, MO. In 2006, he performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference at Rowan University (NJ), the same event in which the student brass quintet from Central Methodist University was invited to play in a master class conducted by the American Brass Quintet. Perkins was also on the Player’s Roster of Contemporary Music of the College Music Society 2004-06.


As an orchestral trumpet player, Perkins has held positions and performed with many orchestras, including the York Symphony (PA), Johnston Symphony (PA), San Angelo Symphony (TX), Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra (TX), Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra (TX), the Mid-Texas Symphony Orchestra, and most recently, as lead trumpet with the Video Games Live Orchestra in Columbia, Missouri. In 2008, he will be entering his 10th season playing principal trumpet with the Shippensburg Festival Chamber Orchestra in Pennsylvania.


In addition to his teaching duties and performance schedule, Perkins also maintains an active private studio and gives brass master classes to regional high school students. Along with his students, he credits much of his success to his primary teachers Raymond Crisara, John Aley, and Albert Moore. Perkins holds memberships in the International Trumpet Guild, College Music Society, Music Educator’s National Conference, and the Missouri Music Educator’s Association.
