Dr. John D. Perkins joined the music faculty at Central Methodist
University in August 2004 and currently teaches studio trumpet and horn,
brass ensembles, and music history. He also serves as a Staff Reviewer
of Recordings for the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Previously,
Dr. Perkins taught at Shippensburg University, Angelo State University,
a San Antonio area school district, and the University of Texas as a
Graduate Assistant of Trumpet.
Versatile as a player, Dr. Perkins has held positions and performed with
countless ensembles, including Stephens College pit orchestras, Video
Games Live Orchestra, Columbia Civic Orchestra Brass Quintet, Odyssey
Chamber Music Series, Cumberland Brass Quintet, Delta Brass Quintet,
Icehouse Brass Quintet, Summit Brass, Columbia Civic Orchestra, 9th
Street Philharmonic, ITG Conference Festival of Trumpets, York Symphony,
Cumberland Valley Chamber Players, Johnston Symphony, San Angelo
Symphony, Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra, Abilene Philharmonic,
Mid-Texas Symphony, Clifford Zerkel Big Band, Saturday Jazz Band, and
the St. Cloud Symphony. Currently, Dr. Perkins plays principal trumpet
with the Shippensburg Festival Orchestra and is also a member of the
Columbia-based Show Me Brass. As a guest soloist, he has appeared with
several ensembles in Missouri, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Texas,
Wisconsin, and Minnesota, and has enhanced numerous church services in
several states, including Washington, D.C. He has performed with many
well-known artists and conductors such as Stuart Malina, Frederica von
Stade, Joshua Bell, Andre Watts, Gerhardt Zimmermann, David Amado,
Elizabeth Schulze, Lauren Curnow, Neal Corwell, Allen Vizzutti, David
Hickman, Sam Pilafian, Michael Johnson, Louis Lane, Shinik Hahm, and
Karel Husa.
Several students of Perkins are professional music educators. His
students have been selected for the Missouri All-Collegiate Band,
Pennsylvania All-State Band, Missouri All-State Honorable Mention Band,
and the Missouri Fine Arts Academy. In 2006, the student brass quintet
from Central Methodist University under his direction was selected to
perform in a master class conducted by the American Brass Quintet at the
International Trumpet Guild Conference at Rowan University. Also
enjoying working with a younger clientele, Dr. Perkins regularly
adjudicates and teaches high brass master classes to middle and high
school students.
Dr. Perkins earned degrees from The University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A.),
The University of Wisconsin - Madison (M.M.), and St. Cloud State
University (B.S.). He holds memberships in the International Trumpet
Guild, College Music Society, Music Educator’s National Conference, and
the Missouri Music Educator’s Association.
