Marla's Blog
In 2 weeks, the semester will be over, finals will be almost finished, and graduation will be upon us. The weather has finally perked up to the mid-70s every day. I finally got to wear shorts outside without threat of frostbite :) However, I don't get to spend much time outside. Right now, I'm knee deep in costumes for the production of House & Garden (which opens Thursday and runs through Sunday...it's two really great plays!). If that wasn't enough, I have more than several last minute papers to write, projects to do, and of course, FINALS! It's enough to drive a girl crazy. Throw in work and APO and I feel like the walking dead on my way to class every morning. What does a good night of sleep feel like again?
Sure, Spring Break was last week, but that doesn't stop me from getting excited about the 3-day weekend! For the first time this YEAR I get to see my entire family in one location. My older sister is 7 months pregnant, and I haven't seen her since last summer! Campus is just about as busy as my weekends...class registration for next year is upon us, housing assignments start at the beginning of April, and there's a campus Leadership Day on April 15th (check out Kevin Eikenberry's blog...there's definitely some cool stuff that he's written). Well, I'm off to enjoy dinner and eggs and fanfare. Something that still boggles me...why does the Easter bunny bring eggs? Odd....
It's been a hectic, overwhelming week. Between papers and tests, projects and my Research Design class (it in itself is a challenge), I have been overworked, sleep-deprived, and feeling the effects of cabin fever. And then came a day like today. For starters, it was absolutely GORGEOUS outside...60 degrees, sunny, breezy. I decided, on such a beautiful day, that I was going to go home for the afternoon. Luckily, my parents don't live too far from Fayette, so a friend and I took off with the windows down and our flip-flops on. I ate at my favorite restaurant. I got to have an interesting conversation with my older brother. I went to a few cemeteries and a shrine. I had a blast doing absolutely nothing, and I couldn't have been any happier. When you've been in college for a long time, you tend to lose touch with home. Sure, my Mom and I still talk regularly, and I get the family e-mail update weekly, but there's something special about being able to go home, even if it's just for the afternoon. Next time you feel a bit overwhelmed, try taking a road trip with friends. Remember to take time for yourself this week...you never know when it might snow again ;) Aloha and seize the day!
Of course, I know that Valentine's Day has already passed us by...but that doesn't mean I can't recap the festivities. I've spent the whole week preparing for the day of love, selling Crush sodas for APO to the student body. You'd think it wouldn't be so time consuming to sell a soda and a tag to people, but it really was! We sold several dozen by the big day, and we were only one of 4 organizations selling Valentine-related sweets. By the time Thursday rolled around, I was already in a "bah-humbug" sort of mood. So, I decided to spend my Valentine's Day in the company of some good friends, eating pizza and ice cream, and watching anti-love movies. It was probably one of the best times I've ever had...even without the roses and chocolate :) I've got a big paper due Wednesday, 2 tests Thursday, and a wedding reception tomorrow (I'm the cake cutter!)...busy, busy, busy. Until next time....aloha and hurry up Spring!
I'm writing to the world on this beautiful Sunday, curled up in my sweatpants and a hoodie, drinking a cup of tea, to the sounds of thunder, lightning, and sleet? The one thing that never ceases to amaze me is Missouri weather. There's a saying that people repeat a lot around here..."If you don't like the weather today, wait for tomorrow"...I propose instead, "If you don't like the weather right now, wait a few hours." I'll elaborate: Last Tuesday, on my way to class, I had to shed my hoodie because it was a smothering 50 degrees and sunny at 8 AM. By 3 PM, I was putting on my gloves, hat, and winter coat because it was snowing. It snowed a few more inches on Thursday, was beautiful and hot Friday and Saturday...and then the rain and sleet today. It's absolutely nuts! In other news...I'm really excited about my classes thus far. My favorite is Theatre Arts, a general education class that introduces you to the world of theatre. My friend, Lindsey, is also in the class with me, and I'm really excited to be working on some of the upcoming theatre productions! Stay dry, stay warm, and enjoy the Superbowl! |
