2008 women's soccer Season outlook

The Lady Eagles are aiming to improve on their 7-9-1 finish to the 2007 season. Head Coach Dan Schmidlin, who is entering his first season at the helm of the program, will look to the seniors for leadership on the team, which has a solid blend of players of all ages.

"The women's program has been very consistent the past three years at right around .500 and hopefully this year we can make a move toward the top half of the conference," Schmidlin said.

Three players who earned postseason honors from the Heart of America Athletic Conference last year return to lead the Lady Eagles. Junior mid-fielder Jessica Bretana (St. Louis, Mo.) was a first-team All-HAAC selection in 2007. She recorded one goal and four assists, while starting all 16 games she played. Senior mid-fielder Jenny Janek (Columbia, Ill.) and junior forward Natalie Rolph (St. Charles, Mo.) also return after being named to the All-HAAC third team a year ago. Janek and Rolph combined for four goals and four assists in 2007.

Among the newcomers to the program, Schmidlin is expecting junior Theresa Weil to contribute immediately. Weil transferred from St. Louis Community College-Meramec, where she played in 15 games during the team's 11-5-1 campaign last year. The Lady Eagles will also welcome nine freshmen to the program.

The Lady Eagles will open their season Aug. 27 at Hannibal LaGrange. Their first home game will be Sept. 4 against University of St. Mary.
