Coach jim sutherland

Coach SutherlandJim Sutherland joined the Lady Eagles after a 10-year coaching stint at Hickman High School in Columbia, Mo. Sutherland’s retirement in February 2006 marked the end of 41-year head coaching career. While at Hickman, he compiled a record of 163-99, surpassed 500 career wins, and was inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. His career record finished at 576-353.

Although retired from the high school game, Sutherland is no stranger to the collegiate level, nor is he weary of a struggling program. He rescued two such programs in the 70s and 80s. His first, University of Minnesota—Crookston, was 2-22 before Sutherland took the helm in 1976. His second, the NAIA DII Black Hills State College (now University), was 3-21 the year before his arrival in 1981. Both schools became winning programs and conference title contenders under Sutherland’s direction. Sutherland currently resides in Columbia, Mo…sort of.

He and his wife Conney spend the "off-season" at their "retirement cabin" in the Black Hills of South Dakota. They have three children also in the mid-Missouri area: Nikki Kuchta, wife of Tim Kuchta and mother of Austin, Maci and Zac; Jason Sutherland, former MU standout; and Andi Brooks, wife of Mike Brooks, mother of Britain and head coach of the Lady Eagles.
