Fred Smith is preparing for his third season at the helm of the Central
Methodist baseball program.
Before taking over at CMU,
Smith served as assistant and then head baseball coach at
Boonville High School from 1989-2007, with a career coaching record of
87-34.
Prior to his coaching and teaching career at Boonville High
School, Smith coached baseball in the Pettis County Public School system
for more than seven years and served as assistant baseball coach at
Central Methodist from 1986 to 1989. During his coaching career, he
compiled two district titles and one conference title while at Northwest
High School.
During his baseball career at Central Methodist, Smith was selected as a
two-time First Team All-Conference player, while also receiving First
Team All-District honors in 1983 and being named to the All-Region team
in 1984. He set a CMU single-season RBI record and batted .430. As a
player at Hickman High School, Smith was named a High School
All-American.
Smith was invited to the 1984 Olympic tryouts and was later invited to
professional team tryouts with the New York Yankees, Philadelphia
Phillies and Atlanta Braves.
Smith, a 1979 Hickman High School graduate, earned
his bachelor’s degree in education at CMU in 1985 and has undertaken
graduate studies at University of Missouri-Columbia. Smith and his wife, Gayla (Renfrow) Smith, a 1987 CMU
graduate, live in Nelson.
