Central Excellence Fund
What is the Central Excellence Fund?
The Central Excellence Fund (the CMU Annual Fund) encompasses those
gifts that are unrestricted, or not designated for any specific program
or department. Central Excellence Fund gifts are deemed repeatable, or
gifts upon which one can plan and build from year to year; they are not
one-time, special gifts or bequests. Gifts to the Central Excellence
Fund come from alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and
corporations.

Why is the Central Excellence Fund so important?
Gifts to the Central Excellence Fund have an immediate and direct impact
on all academic programs and in the life and work of current students,
faculty, and staff.
Tuition alone has never covered the costs of private higher education.
The University must therefore count upon a growing infusion of annual
charitable support to help meet ongoing operational needs and to meet
the costs of special endeavors to ensure future strength.
CMU is not a state-supported institution, yet it must compete with
institutions that do benefit from public support. Currently only 64% of
the University's operating budget comes from tuition and fees. The
balance is provided through current private gifts and from the revenue
of endowments established by earlier donors.
How are gifts to the Central Excellence Fund used?
Private gifts made through the Central Excellence Fund support CMU in
many ways...
Assist deserving current students through CMU based scholarships.
Bolster the work of faculty through equipment upgrades, journal
subscriptions, support for conference attendance, and annual faculty
development grants.
365 days a year - even on holidays and during semester breaks - there
are continuing needs in the areas of landscape, maintenance, heating,
cooling, communications, and the repair and restoration of our beautiful
historic buildings. These are ongoing needs that the University can
address in a timely way because of your support.
