Major Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E) with a major in Physical
Education
This program is designed to prepare students to teach in the field of
physical education, health and athletics. It meets the classroom
standards for a teaching certificate in the State of Missouri -- grades
PK-12. The course work included is designed to acquaint the student with
the history and development of physical education, knowledge of body
functioning, theory of teaching physical education and athletic
coaching, and testing and measurements procedures.
All students preparing for teacher certification under this program
should apply for admission to the teacher education program in their
second year of study. In Education 201, Introduction to Teaching,
application forms are distributed and teacher certification requirements
are discussed. Transfer students should apply during their first
semester at CMU. For a complete description of certification

SAT test scores, consult the Education Programs section in this catalog.
In addition to the course requirements listed below, students must (a)
demonstrate a satisfactory preliminary teaching record by assisting in
required physical education classes for three semesters (PE 201) during
the sophomore and junior years, (b) demonstrate the ability to score,
keep time, umpire, referee, organize teams and tournaments, and
administer skill tests for team and individual sports and activities,
and (c) achieve satisfactory results on a battery of physical fitness,
motor ability and sports skills tests. During the last semester prior to
graduation, each student must pass a comprehensive written and oral exam
given by the physical education faculty.
PreK-12 Major - 53 semester hours of physical education courses: PE 120,
201 (three semesters), 210, 211, 215, 217, 218, 219, 220, 303, 304, 315,
321, 322, 323, 324, 327, 328, 339. Related work of 35 semester hours
including BI 101, 102, ED 200, NU 215 and the 28 semester hours of
professional education courses required for secondary teacher education.
Grades 9-12 Major - 40 semester hours of physical education courses: PE
201 (three semesters) 210, 211, 215, 217, 218, 219, 303, 304, 315, 321,
323, 324, 327, 339. Related work of 35 semester hours including BI 101,
102, NU 215 and the 28 semester hours of professional education courses
required for secondary teacher education.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) With a Major in Recreational
Administration
The course requirements for this major are the same as the Bachelor
of Science in Education in Physical Education, (grades 9-12) except that
the following courses are not required for Recreational Administration:
the teaching block (16 hours), ED 201 (2 hours), ED 202 (1 hour), ED 250
(2 hours), PY 342 (2 hours) and PY 343 (1 hour). The courses removed
from the 9-12 physical education major may be replaced with 18 hours of
business approved by the division chair. The following courses are a
