Secondary
The Secondary Education Program at Central Methodist University is
based on the mission of Central Methodist University which is to
integrate a high quality liberal arts education and professional
preparation so as to promote life-long learning, social responsibility
and service within its students. The program is designed to give
pre-service teachers the knowledge about a particular subject area as
well as the methods and skills required to be efficient and effective
teachers in that specific subject area. Competency in teaching is
developed by utilizing a combination of classes, practica, mini-teaching
and student teaching experiences that are developmental in nature and
designed to encourage maximum growth.
Each student is expected to master the content area by successfully
completing a rigorous series of courses which were selected to meet
Department of Elementary and
Secondary Education competencies as well as the standards proposed
by the various subject specific societies such as the
National Council of Teachers of English,
the National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics, National
Council for Social Studies, and the
National Science Teachers Association. In addition, each secondary
major is required to take a subject-specific methods course (or courses
in Physical Education) which have been designed following a careful
review of the standards prescribed by the learned society for that area.
