Middle School

The Middle School Education program is a child-centered program, designed to develop middle school educators who will be equipped with the knowledge base, competencies, proper attitude, and practiced skills suited to working with middle school students and addressing their specific needs. Pre-service middle grade teachers are exposed to the history and philosophy underlying middle grade education the most current research regarding the middle school child, and the most current research and practical applications concerning the middle school curriculum, programs of study, and their delivery system.

The goals and curriculum for the Middle School Education program were selected by the education department to help students master the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education competencies and are based on the recommendations of the National Middle School Association and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In addition, the standards of subject-specific societies such as the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council for Social Studies and National Science Teachers Association.

Students who elect to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Education with an emphasis on middle school education must choose a concentration in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Science, or combinations of the above. The subject area requirements may be found in the College Catalog under the specific disciplines.

Middle School Curriculum
Middle school certification candidates must complete the following education courses in addition to the general education requirements and other subject area requirements:

  • ED 201 Introduction to Teaching
  • ED 202 Introduction to Teaching Practicum
  • ED 310 Middle Level Education
  • ED 311 Middle Level Transescent Child
    OR
  • PY 223 Developmental Psychology
  • ED 312 Middle Level Curriculum and Instruction
  • ED 318 Reading Assessment and Instruction
  • ED 319 Reading Assessment and Instruction Practicum
  • ED 320 Teaching Reading and Writing in the Middle School
  • ED 351 General Methods of Teaching
  • ED 362 Supervised Student Teaching
  • ED 370 Special Teaching Methods (Subject Specific)
  • PY 210 Educational Psychology
  • PY 342 Psychology of the Exceptional Child
  • PY 343 Psychology of the Exceptional Child Practicum

The above courses must be completed with a grade point average of 2.5 and no grade lower than a "C."
