What skills do I need to succeed in this major?

If you're considering a psychology major at CMU, you should have strong interpersonal skills and be a good listener. Excellent communication skills and respect for individuals and their cultural differences is a must. You should have patience, empathy, and be ethical and honest in your interactions with others.

If you are interested in human behavior, and believe you would enjoy learning how to help individuals live happier, healthier lives, then this major would be a great choice for you.

What can I expect to learn?

As a psychology major at CMU, you will learn the major theories and principles of human behavior, and gain the skills to critically analyze and synthesize scientific support for theories. You will also build a foundation of abilities required for the helping professions.

Will I have opportunities for internships and hands-on learning experiences?

The psychology department strongly encourages internships which you may complete for academic credit. Students have completed internships with school counselors, daycare programs, foster families, the state of Missouri's Department of Social Services, and many more. Additionally, many of your courses will incorporate classroom activities and projects designed to help you learn concepts and apply learning to real-world situations.

What are CMU students who graduated with this degree doing now?

Approximately half of CMU students who graduate with a major in psychology go on to graduate school in the field soon after graduation. Our psychology graduates carry job titles such as mental health technician, children's services worker, youth care specialist, director of employment services, community support specialist, corrections officer, team leader in business, and more. As a CMU psychology major, you will be valued in all career fields that are concerned with human behavior.
