About This Program

The Philosophy major will prepare you to take on many of the most commonly asked questions regarding humanity. Additionally, you will focus on how to think through such questions before determining theories. You will develop abilities in contemplation, debate, and overall communication – skills highly desired by employers. Your knowledge will prepare you for success in law school, politics, civic leadership, and many other areas.

As a CMU Philosophy major, you will have opportunities to:

  • take classes such as Philosophy of Religion, Classical to Medieval Thought, Ethics and Leadership, The Study of Knowledge, and World Religions Today
  • build skills by developing theories, leading discussions, justifying claims, understanding validity, considering counter arguments, and embracing a variety of interpretations    
  • become prepared for careers in philosophy, law, education, theology, government, and other areas
  • receive the preparation needed to earn an advanced degree
