As your reading, writing, and critical thinking skills improve, CMU's history major will enhance your abilities to interpret the way past and present events have formed and continue to form our future.

What can I expect to learn?

As a history student at CMU, your classes will focus not only on major events of the past, but on why those events unfolded and were decided by individual choices. You will learn how to critically evaluate and analyze historical documents, and how historians critique and present evidence - becoming fluent and proficient in both oral and written communication. Additionally, you'll learn of key theoretical concepts, which inform the discipline of history.

Will I have opportunities for internships and hands-on learning experiences?

You will be able to earn internship credit and design a special problems course. Internships are designed to give you practical experience working in a government or non-profit, history-connected job. The special problems course gives you the opportunity to pursue subjects you're interested in that aren't offered or covered in regular coursework.

What are CMU students who graduated with this degree doing now?

With a degree in history from CMU, you will be prepared to enter into careers in museum operations, business management, interest group advocacy, consultancy, and public service at the national, state or local level. The history major is often used as the preliminary step toward professional training in law, library science, theology, or graduate study. A history emphasis is sought after in many areas of industry, commerce, government and academics.
