The prowess of Central Methodist University’s nationally-ranked women’s basketball team is no secret, and neither is the talent of the women’s intramural basketball team, which recently claimed first place at the Missouri Intramural Recreational Sports Association state championship at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.
By defeating Missouri S&T 51-39 in the title game, CMU secured its third consecutive MoISRA title. Coach Jakob Junker’s team lost its opening game in the tournament to the MSU Baller Bears, but defeated them later in the weekend before winning the championship.
“I was very proud of how the team responded after that first game,” Junker said. “We came out a little slow, and Missouri State hit all of their open shots. After that, our ball movement and overall game play was much better. Each game we improved and took that momentum into the championship.”
CMU’s Lexi Royster was tournament MVP, and Kaylea Hodes made the all-tournament team. Other team members are Caitlyn Harwell, Abby Thompson, Abby Naylor, and Mary Gonzalez.
